Paardenhof Guesthouse is Heaven in a French Farmstead

Need to ferry over the channel ? Why not skip the chaos at Calais and go via Dunquerke. That’s what we did last summer. And the French hotel (or guest house) we found just down the road from Dunkirk, was a dream come true …

Paardenhof Guesthouse is a treat for the senses. The translation in English means “Horse Farm Guest House”. And yes they have an array of beautifully kept happy horses. There are even ducks complete with their pond, and a Springer Spaniel that will steal your heart …

The guesthouse is situated in a wonderful farm, which is home to your host and Hostess – Delphine and Quentin.

The rooms are situated in a beautifully renovated stable block originally built in the 18 hundreds. There are no more than two on-suite guest rooms tucked away in what would have been the hay loft. The bedrooms are brand sparklingly new, spacious, furnished with quality, durable materials and furnishings. But all done with a decadent eye on design. The bathrooms are compact but lack nothing at all. And again really lovingly designed. You can feel the depth of thought put into the design. Delphine’s has included many finishing touches that reflect a delicate French Flare !

Downstairs there is a lounge, a fully stocked kitchen and dining/breakfast area. The decadent design follows suit here too. All open plan with some of the original features remaining. One of the interior stable doors, for example, has been restored, and in its original situ, it now takes centre stage, perfectly separating the entry area from the lounge. The old brick fire place is ready to jump into flames should you deem it necessary. The whole place is just stunning articulate décor o`natural that instantly makes you feel at home. Welcomed into this farmhouse home nestled in the very north of France.

And now to the food …. we are in France, so expectations are high …

Dinner if you so desire, is prepared and served by Delphine herself, and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Delicious … we had a chicken casserole, bread, and wine … all flowed as if there were to be no tomorrow … My only disappointment was in my jeans, which did not have enough room to accommodate, or fully appreciate, the pear tart that followed … and then of course the inevitable cheese … my mouth is watering just remembering it all …

Breakfast is an equal extravaganza … eggs cooked to your liking, croissants galore, again with the cheese, cereals, yogurts, fruit etcetera etcetera etcetera …

Nothing seemed to much for Delphine, she really does take pride in her magnificent accomplishment as a hostess. Guesthouses, or indeed Hotels with this level of attention to detail are few and far between. I recommend Paardenhof Guesthouse whole heartedly, and can`t wait to return. It really is a perfect stay for those in need of a replenishing country break, or if like us, you are just passing through, and require an eloquent bed and breakfast. If however, you are just passing – I guarantee you will wish you had stayed a while ….

So in closing, thank you Delphine and Quentin. May your door be blessed with guests who truly appreciate the pure heaven that is Paardenhof Guesthouse.
