How about a night in La Rioja (hic!)

A few weeks ago, we were traveling through la rioja region of Spain. And did we have a lovely hotel to stay in ? Why yes we most certainly did !

Palacio Casa Fuerte …

A divine find … the hotel is a 15th century palace that was in fact still inhabited by the family of the Duke and Duchess Fuerte until recently. It was then sold and converted – very sympathetically into a hotel with no more than 5 rooms …

Suite La Gloria

This family run gem is an absolute steal at the prices they charge for the rooms. We stayed in Suite La Gloria … Wow, Double jacuzzi bath, beautiful comfortable 4 poster bed. And a small balcony. All designed with the original ancient stone wall interior. The photos on the website do not do this room justice at all ….

We had a wonderful stay. Arriving in the afternoon just in time for a late siesta, after sampling the local wines of course (and the bath). Later we awoke in time to bathe again before dinner … not allowed to say too much there, but I can assure you this bath is well big enough for two and the jets work beautifully !

Dinner in The Restaurant

Going down for dinner, I was stunned by the beauty of the grounds. Not big, but you can feel the history. A massive old tree sits to shade a small pond and fountain where you can almost see the Spanish ladies taking refuge form the summer sun. Really lovely. So you meander across the court yard and into the restaurant which was an ancient grape press. This restaurant is just Fabulous. Again, the old stone wall interior. It has been beautifully converted, lots of thought put into keeping as much original architecture as possible.

And now to the meal itself … It was Perfect !

Now, I can tell you I am a fussy eater and I Love good food. I mean really good food. This meal was delicious. We had an amazing goats cheese salad to start. We both then had steak – which was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. They even made me a sauce, which was not on the menu. Obviously the wine flowed effortlessly … which concluded the dining experience – no need for a sweet ! Back to the Bath !!!

Needless to say, we were not up with the sparrows the following morning. But we didn’t do too badly as I think we were seated for breakfast by 9 am … And what a feast … they seemed to cater for almost ever European want. Cereals, toast, fruit, hams, cheeses, pastries. I forget what else but the buffet lacked nothing at all. It was all so fresh the croissants were still warm. Here is where we met the lady of the house. A delightful Spanish lady, who was ready to cook us any type of hot egg breakfast we would like … dare I say more … my jeans by this time were complaining more than a little …

In closing I would urge anyone traveling through this region of Spain to make a stop here. It is a rare gem, and such good value for money. And if you are a lovely of Spanish wine … well, you will be in the right place.
